Do You Know What Your Newborn is Crying For?

Share

The last few weeks of the prenatal period are full of discomfort, and the mother wishes the child could come into this world instantly. At this stage, first-time mothers don’t realize that the baby with them is safe and quiet in their bodies. It has no worldly needs to be fulfilled, and after coming into this world, it will ask her mother for every need by crying out with no timetable.

Otherwise, healthy newborns may scream on and off, sometimes for many hours. When you are a new parent, one of your biggest concerns is figuring out what your infant’s cries are trying to tell you.

Find out when the last time was that he fed himself. It’s either too hot for him or uncomfortable with it.

  • Newborns cry without shedding tears for the first few weeks, as their tear ducts are still developing.
  • A baby can recognize their mother’s voice and heartbeat from birth, which provides immediate comfort.
  • Babies are more likely to cry in the late afternoon or evening due to overstimulation or fatigue.
  • Newborns can cry as a way to release built-up energy, even if their needs are met.
  • The pitch of a baby’s cry can indicate the urgency of their need, with higher-pitched cries often signaling pain or distress.
  • Some cultures use specific rocking techniques or traditional lullabies to calm crying babies effectively.

Why does he seem so anxious, or does he want to be on your lap, or does he have an upset stomach? So here are some explanations and reasons a baby might be crying

Hunger or Overeating

Because newborns cannot consume three substantial meals at once as adults can, they often scream because they are hungry. They are required to take sips of milk periodically. Babies sleep weary after drinking milk.

The baby usually cries because of hunger. The Baby’s hunger signals may include:

  • Inhaling
  • Finding the breast or bottle by poking their mouth here and there
  • Fist-clenching
  • Lip-smacking
  • Mouth-opening and trying to take whatever touches the mouth

If your infant seems hungry, feed them. Newborns feed every 1-3 hours (8-12 times per day), taking 2-3 ounces every feeding. Growing babies may go longer between feedings.

Sometimes overfed newborns cry. The baby might become bloated from too much milk. When babies are full, then:

  • They hush
  • They reject breast or bottle
  • Hands keep relaxed
  • They sleep soundly
  • Baby burping helps with digestion and gas

Tiredness

Baby crying from exhaustion is frequent. Being tiny and adorable is tiresome. Newborns require 17 hours of sleep daily, so they’re often exhausted. Their brain and body are growing quickly, so they can’t accomplish much on their own. Help your infant sleep if they’re tired.

Here are some sleep-inducing tips:

  • Follow the ABCs of healthy sleep whenever you sleep.
  • Swaddle them or try alternatives.
  • Make sure they get enough sleep by scheduling naps.
  • These baby-calming strategies will also help them sleep.

Diaper Rash

Babies may or may not scream when their diapers become wet, but as soon as their delicate skin is irritated, they will let out a wail. Make sure that the diaper or cloth nappy is correctly fastened, and that it is clean. Check this carefully.

For baby baths, never put the infant in the basin with cold water or in the bathtub. First, you need to check whether the water is lukewarm.

Full diapers may cause irritation and weeping. Changing diapers quickly is important, mainly if the diaper is filled with poop. Parents may smell feces in a diaper. Every 2-3 hours, newborns require a diaper change.

Younger infants’ diapers may include a blue indication strip when they urinate. This may assist the caretakers in changing it.

Baby’s Environment‘s Temperature

If a baby is hot or chilly, it may cry. A baby’s car seat jacket shouldn’t be excessively puffy or induce overheating. You may remove the baby’s jacket and put it on them in the car seat. Make sure the baby is sleeping cool and covered. Buy a warm and cozy baby blanket and newborn booties. When outside, they should remain in the shade and wrapped up.

Some women dress their infants in woolen garments far before winter, and they do not stop using warm clothing until well into the springtime. The infant does not like the experience of being dressed in such bulky clothing. Here is a tip to check the baby’s temperature.

A baby’s stomach is one of the best ways to check its temperature. It can tell the body temperature more accurately than the foot or hand.

If the baby’s tummy is warm, try removing some layers of clothing or the heavy blanket off its body. On the other hand, if the infant is chilly, try placing a towel or blanket on top of it.

Maintain a comfortable temperature in the space where your child sleeps.

Pain

Infections or irritations may cause babies to cry. Earaches, teething, and diaper rash may hurt. Doctors can cure many of these illnesses. If an infant suffers discomfort or infection, see a doctor.

The child’s typical rhythm of sobbing shifts more and more as the illness progresses. He lets out a piercing scream. It is best to take it to a hospital or a doctor.

Some symptoms that every mother should know include:

  • If the child has ear ache, it tries to touch the ear while crying. In the effort to touch the ear, the infant may hit the cheeks or head. Usually, a dose of paracetamol works.
  • If the baby has stomach ache, usually the burping or passing the gas; otherwise is stopped. The mother can diagnose the problem by observing the child. Stomach or tummy pain can be checked by another means as well.

Take the baby in your hands by gripping it from the armpits. If the baby bends the knees and screams, it means that there is a problem in the tummy. If you have a colic baby, colic drops can be given immediately for some relief. Infants face some other frequent problems such as diarrhea, constipation, and fever after vaccination.

If the mother is aware of the problems, she will only be able to convey to the doctor the issue with the baby.

Baby Needs to be Pampered or Lay in the Lap

Sometimes, the little buddy cries to get attention or to be carried by the mother. If you hold a newborn infant for an extended period, you will ruin its habit of sleeping in its crib.

These days, baby car seats, carrycots, and baby slings may be purchased from various retailers. You may either sit or lay your child down in it while you sit somewhere in front of a secure location. Or it may happen that keeping the infant in the same position, such as laying down, might lead to boredom.

At this point, the baby wants to assert that enough is enough and starts the protest by raising a cane.

Other Causes of Infant Crying

  • Overstimulation can be a reason for crying. Stimulation helps infants learn and experience new things, but too much may lead to fussiness and screaming.
  • Baby cries because they want to play or haven’t spent enough energy between sleep.
  • The baby may cry if they can’t locate you, the mother (even if you’re only a few feet away).
  • These are momentary reasons and may be handled easily.

When a baby screams regularly or for extended durations, it’s typical for caregivers to feel overwhelmed and upset. When babies cry like this, they just try to express their needs, as they can’t communicate or comprehend their feelings.

The infant may quiet down or become less distressed if the caregiver remains calm.

How to Keep Calm With a Crying Baby?

If you’re attempting to keep calm when dealing with a screaming newborn, try:

  • Slowly inhaling
  • Putting baby down to rest
  • Light music may be comforting.
  • Sleeping (challenging for new parents!)
  • If you’re meeting the baby’s fundamental requirements and they’re still crying, visit a doctor

Some Precautions You Must Take While Raising an Infant

Wrapping young infants securely in a blanket and holding them on your lap will provide them with the same sense of security and coziness they had while still in their mother’s womb. They will undoubtedly have a positive experience.

Since your child is already used to the natural lullaby, the sound of your heartbeat, why don’t you try singing it to them?

The lovely melody known as a lullaby has its roots in an age-old practice that originated as anciently as motherhood. A mother expresses her love by singing it, and the infant understands it. Toys with sounds, vacuum cleaners, and even televisions may all have songs performed by a human or a mechanical voice. Mixing is possible.

Rocking on a chair is soothing for a child. Similarly, if there is a swing in the home, even if it is only a decorative swing, the infant finds it a very comfortable place to sleep.

Babies may also be calmed and relaxed with a good massage.

Takeaway

It is challenging for a mother to see her child crying. While the baby is weeping, the mother’s mind is echoed by hundreds of apprehensions. So, being a mother does not need only steel strength but very calm patience. Mothers who become very emotional or overreact to the baby’s sobbing cannot handle the baby correctly in the long run.

Making it a habit for an infant to pick it up and start swinging would only create problems for the mother in the future. Traditionally, the elders advise mothers not to indulge the child in the habit of lap sleeping. It spoils the baby, and in the end, mother’s temperament explodes.

Understanding the reasons for crying is a time-taking task and increases mother-child attachment.

Lying a baby in a baby cot, swinging bed, or even in a homemade swing keeps it comfortable and calm and sleeps sound for maximum time.
